You’ll Need:
Scissors or gardening shears
A clean vase
Tape, a floral frog, or a small ball of chicken wire (depending on your vase choice, one of these mechanic options will make most sense)
Where to begin?
Build your mechanics: Tape your grid, secure your floral frog, or shape your chicken wire, and tape it into place
Prepare your flowers: Remove unwanted foliage (leaves that fall below the water line on the stem, when placed in your vase), remove unwanted buds and/or thorns, separate breaks in your stems
Organize your materials: If you are new to designing, organizing your flowers by flower type/shape will help you to build a cohesive design. Separate out and line up your focals, your fillers, your greenery, etc.
How to achieve a Garden aesthetic
Choose a complementary colour palette
Develop your base with foliage, focus on creating a natural shape with lots of texture and movement
Add your filler flowers close to the base of your arrangement, with a few stems longer than others to create dimension
Add your medium focals in groupings at different heights
Add your focals in smaller groupings, focussing on keeping the largest blooms closer to the base of the arrangement
Add your dancing flowers, keeping the stems as long as possible to add an airy feeling to the arrangement
Bud vases should have 3 - 5 stems with textured foliage and smaller blooms. Aim to keep your bud vases feeling airy and light, in an effort to compliment your centrepieces.
How to achieve a modern aesthetic
Choose a bold palette, with little to no greenery
Keep your floral varieties as minimal as possible
Choose your florals wisely by selecting only a few different sizes of blooms: medium focals, focals, dancing flowers
Group your flowers close together and build shapes by layering blooms
Add dimension by adding flowers of different sizes
Add your dancing flowers and keep the stems long to allow for visual space within your arrangement
Bud vases should include 1-2 focal or medium focal flowers, of the same variety that were included in your centrepieces.
